In Romania, the winter tire obligation does not automatically start on November 1 and does not end on a fixed date. It is related to the condition of the road. If you drive on a road covered with snow, ice or ice, the vehicle must be equipped accordingly.
This rule is reminded by the [Ministry of Internal Affairs](https://www.mai.gov.ro/recomandari-pentru-circulatia-in-conditii-de-iarna/). Conditions can be present in October in a mountain area and absent on a warm December day in a city.
Who is responsible in traffic
The company must prepare the car in accordance with the confirmed period and use. The driver remains responsible for the way they drive and the decision to enter a road in dangerous conditions.
Tell the approximate route when booking, especially if you are going to the mountains. Don't hide your destination and don't assume that all roads have the same conditions.
What do you check at pick-up?
Look at the general condition of the tires and ask for clarification if you have any questions. Also check:
- the lights;
- wipers;
- defogging;
- windshield fluid;
- the mirrors;
- any on-board warnings.
You don't have to be a mechanic, but don't ignore a visible problem.
Tires do not eliminate risk
Winter tires improve grip in the conditions for which they are designed, but braking distances may remain long. Reduce speed, increase distance and avoid sudden maneuvers.
The Home Office recommends adjusting your speed and taking extra care, as the slippery road increases the stopping distance.
Anti-skid chains
The need and use of chains depends on the route, signage and conditions. Do not fit inappropriate equipment or proceed on a road for which the car or driver is not prepared.
For a mountain route, discuss ahead of time and check the official road information.
There is no "SUV that doesn't slide"
An SUV does not beat the ice. Traction, tires, speed and driver matter. A compact car properly equipped and driven can be safer than a large vehicle driven too fast.
Choose class based on passengers and baggage, not a false sense of invulnerability.
The route may change
Check the forecast and road conditions before you leave. If there are severe warnings or road closures, postpone or change the route. A booking with unlimited miles does not oblige you to continue.
Travel to other EU countries
Tire regulations differ between countries. Some have calendar periods or additional requirements. For a Wise Cars car, exit is only allowed within the EU, with approval and power of attorney requested at least 5 working days in advance.
Check the official rules of each state you visit. The [Your Europe] portal (https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/driving-abroad/car-rental-abroad/index_en.htm) points out that winter requirements may differ and the company should be informed.
What do you do if the weather changes
Pull over in a safe place and assess the conditions. Don't go on just to meet a tourist hour. If you have a problem with the car or the equipment, contact Wise Cars.
Return in winter
Plan extra time for traffic and window cleaning. Do not pour hot water on frozen surfaces. Return same-to-same fuel and communicate delays.
The right preparation
Say where you're going, check the car with the agent and adjust the route. Check out the fleet, the autumn car and reserve for the real period guide.
