The choice of transmission is not just a matter of preference. It can influence comfort in traffic, fatigue on a long journey and the availability of the desired class. The best option is the one that you drive safely and that fits your itinerary.
Don't use a rental car to quickly learn a completely unfamiliar transmission.
When automatic transmission is useful
An automatic can reduce the effort in congested traffic in Bucharest, Cluj or Timișoara. The lack of repeated gear changes is also comfortable for a business schedule with many stops.
It may be suitable if:
- you drive mainly in the city;
- you have a long route and want less fatigue;
- you usually use automatic machines;
- you travel to an unknown place;
- you prefer simpler operation in traffic jams.
Slot availability can drop quickly in season, so book after you have firm dates.
When you choose the manual
A manual transmission may have wider availability in certain grades and periods. It's a good choice if you drive it comfortably and don't mind traffic or frequent changes.
Don't select the manual only for a price difference if your experience is very limited. Safety and confidence behind the wheel matter more.
Consumption cannot be compared only after transmission
Consumption depends on model, engine, load, traffic and driving style. A modern automatic can be efficient, and an aggressively driven manual can use more.

Urban or mountain road
For the city, the automatic offers comfort. For a mountain route, both can be suitable if the driver knows how to use them and the car is suitable for the road.
Learn the selector positions, parking mode and departure behavior before you leave the drop-off point. Do not descend a slope in a manner that removes engine control.
What do you check at pick-up?
For automatic:
- positions P, R, N and D;
- parking brake;
- start mode;
- possible additional modes;
- step display.
For the manual:
- the position of the reverse gear;
- coupling point;
- parking brake;
- the number of steps;
- the normal behavior of the clutch.
Ask the agent for an explanation. Do not leave until essential commands are clear.
Reserve a model or a class
A photograph does not automatically guarantee an exact model. Check what confirms the booking: similar model or class, transmission and essential features.
If automatic is a requirement, not just a preference, say so and check the confirmation document.
Price, protection and kilometers
Compare the total, not just the difference between transmissions. Protection can include 100, 200 km/day or unlimited and can asee a different warehouse.

Second driver
If the additional person is used to another type of transmission, discuss the choice beforehand. Any driver must be declared. Premium Plus includes an additional driver for free; for the other protections it is against cost.
